We want Mentor to be usable by every student, including students who rely on a keyboard, a screen reader, or other assistive technology. This page describes what we've built so far and, just as importantly, what we haven't verified yet — we'd rather be accurate than claim a level of conformance we can't back up.
1. Our approach
We aim to build Mentor towards the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, as a target standard. As at the date of this page, we have not commissioned a formal WCAG audit or third-party accessibility assessment, and we do not claim full conformance with WCAG or any other accessibility standard. This page will be updated once we have.
2. What we’ve built so far
Concrete accessibility measures already in the Service include:
- keyboard support for navigation menus and dialogs (including the site header’s dropdowns and mobile menu), built on accessible, keyboard-tested UI components rather than custom-built widgets;
- visible focus indicators on interactive elements when navigating by keyboard;
- descriptive labels on icon-only buttons (for example, “Open menu” and “Close menu”) for screen reader users;
- a “skip to main content” link on the homepage so keyboard users can bypass repeated navigation;
- respect for your operating system’s “reduce motion” setting on animated elements such as the mobile menu; and
- semantic HTML headings and landmarks intended to support screen reader navigation.
3. Where we know we still have work to do
We have not yet:
- run an automated or manual audit against WCAG 2.1 AA success criteria;
- tested the Service with real assistive technology users;
- specifically reviewed colour contrast across every part of the Service, or how mathematical notation, diagrams, and other question-images are described to screen reader users; or
- published a formal remediation plan or timeline — we intend to do this once an audit has identified concrete priorities.
4. Tell us if something doesn’t work
If you use assistive technology and find something in Mentor that is difficult or impossible to use, we want to know. Contact us at support@learnwithmentor.com.au with as much detail as you can — the page you were on, the device and assistive technology you were using, and what happened. We will treat accessibility reports as a priority and let you know when the issue has been addressed.
