Area Between Two Shapes

Find the area of the region left over when a smaller shape is cut out of a larger one, by subtracting the smaller area from the larger area.

Imagine a large rectangle with a smaller rectangle cut out of it, like a picture frame. The remaining area (the frame itself) is found by subtraction, not addition.
